PayPal allows money to be transferred from person-to-person or business-to-business, without the need for money orders or checks. Anyone who has an email address can send or receive online payments securely. The payments will need to be funded by a credit card or bank account, and a user can also maintain a cash balance in a PayPal account. PayPal does not charge users to join the service, but it imposes fees when users receive money into their PayPal account from others. For example, a person buys an item on eBay and pays the seller via PayPal. PayPal will take a small percentage of the proceeds from the sale before depositing the funds in the seller's account.
Auto Sweep
PayPal offers an auto sweep function to users who have qualified for a premier or business account. The basic personal accounts are not eligible for auto sweep. Once enabled, this feature performs periodic automatic transfers of any money in the PayPal account to a checking account designated by the account holder. Users who do a high volume of transactions will not need to log into their PayPal account and manually transfer funds. Additionally, PayPal may freeze a user's account if a buyer disputes a purchase, and the auto sweep feature makes sure a minimum of funds are tied up in a frozen account.
Starting Auto Sweep
The auto sweep feature is not disclosed on the website, and the only way to enable the feature is to call PayPal and request it. Users may log into their account and click on the 'Contact Us' link. Then select 'Call Us' and ask the PayPal representative to enable auto sweep on the account. If the account is eligible, the representative will enable the feature.
Disabling Auto Sweep
Once the auto sweep feature is enabled, users can disable it from the 'Edit Profile' screen. PayPal may temporarily disable the auto sweep feature if an electronic transfer is initiated from your bank account into the PayPal account (to prevent the money from immediately being 'swept' back to the bank account). Additionally, the auto sweep will be cancelled for a specific day if another money transfer is pending, and the transfer will be reversed to prevent a negative PayPal account balance.
