How to Avoid PayPal on eBay

1. Log on to your eBay account and select an item you want to bid on. Scroll down to the bottom of the auction listing, where different payment methods are listed. Although PayPal is typically listed as the preferred method of payment, most (if not all) users accept certified check.
2. If you win the auction or select to pay the purchase asking price, email the seller and state that you are sending a certified check.
3. Go to your local bank or credit union and ask for a certified check. There is typically a processing fee of a few dollars for this check. The check is printed from money in your account and you are given a receipt for the check. However, unlike checks you write from a checking account, the money is already withdrawn from your account, so losing the check means you are out the value of the check (printing another one forces you to withdraw additional funds from your account).
4. Mail the certified check to the seller. You may want to send it certified mail, forcing the recipient to sign upon receipt. This gives you a paper trail and knowledge of the individual receiving your payment.
5. Wait for the seller to receive your check payment. The seller will mail your product after receiving your check.

How to Declare PayPal Income

1. Log in to your PayPal account. Click on the 'History' tab. Click on the 'Payments Received' link to filter your accounts. Change the dates displayed to show the calendar year for which you are paying taxes. Click the 'Print' button to get a hard copy for your records. If you don't have a printer, you can just record the transactions for later viewing.
2. Declare any income that you received through PayPal. If you normally report your income using a W2 form, report the income you received through PayPal there. PayPal functions as a bank account for tax purposes. Even if you transferred funds from your PayPal account to a bank account after the year ended, the funds are considered income on the date they arrived in your account. When declaring received payments as income, the fee that PayPal takes out of transactions can be subtracted from the amount.
3. Declare the PayPal income you received for the year on the IRS's form 1040 if you are self-employed, instead of using a W2.
4. Double-check to ensure that the PayPal income you reported is accurate. You don't need to report income that you transferred from your PayPal account to a bank account twice if you accurately report the PayPal income.

How to Receive Payment Via PayPal for Online Sales

1. Create a PayPal account by clicking the 'Sign Up' link on the top of the PayPal page (see Resources). Select a Premier or Business account and click the associated 'Get Started' button to follow the prompts and complete your registration. Enter the buyer's valid email address, a purchase amount and click the radio button next to the 'Goods,' 'Auction goods (non-eBay)' or 'Services' choice. 4. Create an invoice to send your customer a more formal-looking document that contains your business information. Enter the purchaser's email address, include a note (optional) and enter the details, including quantity and description, in the text fields provided. 5. Click the 'Merchant Services' tab on the PayPal menu to add 'Buy Now' or 'Add to Cart' buttons on your website. Generally, if you are selling one item, such as a spa package, you will use the 'Buy Now' button; otherwise, use the 'Add to Cart' button to offer multiple products. Fill in the required information to create your button(s) including item name and price. Additionally, you can specify whether the button should have special features, like a drop-down menu, and you can save the button to reuse it again. How to Accept Credit Cards on eBay

1. Set up a PayPal account (see Resources). You will need to provide PayPal with personal details such as your address and checking account information. PayPal will verify your checking account, making two small deposits of between one and 20 cents. You will need to check your bank statement for the exact amount of the deposits, then enter that information on the PayPal site.
2. When you're listing your items, eBay will ask you to select payment methods. Under PayPal, you can enter the e-mail address you used to set up your PayPal account. Payments will go to that account.
3. Ebay requires sellers to offer PayPal as a method of payment. However, you can also offer alternative ways for your customers to pay with a credit card. Google Checkout is a popular alternative. You can set up an account with it by clicking on the link below (see Resources).
4. If you sell a lot on eBay, you may want to consider establishing yourself as business (sole proprietorship), rather than an individual seller. You can set up a merchant account with both eBay and Paypal. The main benefit of this is lower transaction fees. The drawback is that the IRS will look more carefully into your taxes. To qualify for a business account with Paypal, you have to have been registered with Paypal for at least 90 days. You must have received at least $3,000 in payments in the last calendar month. To keep the account active, you must maintain at least a $1,000/month sales average.
5. If you are a merchant, you may also want to consider Authorize.net (see Resources) as an alternative to PayPal. It has over 200,000 users and lower fees but is still much less popular on eBay than PayPal.

How to Use PayPal Storefront

1. Sign into PayPal Storefront. Use your PayPal email and password. If you don't have a PayPal account, you'll need to set up one before using Storefront.
2. Select your decorations, title and policies for your Storefront widget. You can also add a logo, if you have an image that's 60 by 35 pixels. Your policies include how you ship products, how customers can contact you and anything else you'd like a customer to know about you and your products.
3. Add your product details. Click on the "Products" tab to open up the products page. Here you can give a title to the product you're selling, in addition to setting its price and giving some information about it. You can add a picture, but it should be 188 by 168 pixels and it should be hosted somewhere else--on a free photo site such as Flickr or Photobucket. Paste the photo's URL in the box labeled "Picture of Product."
4. Add your inventory information. The inventory page has options to add sizes, for example, if you're selling T-shirts. Beyond that, you can show how much of any product you have in stock so people can't continue buying a product if it's sold out. This is the place where you should provide special shipping information or specific notes about the product.
5. Add the rest of your products. Press the "+" button to add a new product and repeat the last two steps until you've added everything you need to add.
6. Set your shipping rates. Click on the "Shipping" tab to bring this up. You can make a tiered shipping-rate system, perhaps lowering the shipping rate as more money is spent.
7. Open your store. Click the "Store Open" tab and make sure that your store is open.
8. Publish your Storefront. Click on the "Publish" tab to bring up your options. If you have a MySpace account or a TypePad account, you can choose one of these sites from the list, and Storefront automatically publishes to your MySpace page or TypePad blog. Otherwise you can copy the HTML code that's given to you and paste it into your own website.
9. Update your Storefront as you add stock or change policies.

How to Rent a Car With a PayPal Debit Card

1. Call the rental car company in advance or review their policies online to make sure that they accept Paypal debit cards. The majority of companies that accept bank-issued debit cards will also accept Paypal, but make sure before you begin the rental process.
2. Review Paypal's policy concerning debit card usage. Paypal will hold the funds associated with a transaction for approximately 5 business days in order to give the merchant time to claim the funds. If the funds are not claimed, the hold is released, but the merchant still has 30 days from the original transaction date to claim the funds.
3. Read the rental agreement carefully. Many rental car companies also place temporary holds greater than the amount of the transaction on customer's debit cards to cover any damages that may occur during the rental period. Take note of the total amount to be charged to your card, and when the hold on any additional funds will be released.

Moneygram, on the other hand, requires the sender to visit a MoneyGram agent to complete the transaction. A visit to the company website will help you find the nearest agent. If you opt to send a wire transfer from your bank instead of using MoneyGram, PayPal or Western Union, simply visit your bank to complete the transaction.
3. Go to a money transfer office and fill out the necessary form. To use MoneyGram, a Send Form must be completed. Include the sender's name, the recipient's name and address, the amount to be sent and a 10-word message. The message will be shared by the sender with the intended recipient. The intended recipient will be asked a question based on the message and if it is answered correctly, will collect the money. At Western Union, the Send Form requires the following information: the sender's name, the recipient's name and address, the amount to be sent, and a test question and answer. The test question and answer are a security protocol to ensure that only the intended recipient can collect the money.
4. Hand over the completed Send Form to the teller with the money to be transferred. A processing fee will be charged and the teller will tell you how much. To complete the transaction, pay the teller and present a valid form of personal identification.
5. Receive a reference number from MoneyGram, or a Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) from Western Union. These numbers will help you track your transfer and will be used by the recipient to collect his money.

How to Sell E

Selling E-books using PayPal
1. Log in to PayPal. Search for the 'Merchant Services' button, which is located on the top banner. Click this button.
2. Click the 'Buy Now' button located under the 'Create Buttons' heading. Choose the 'products' option under the 'Accept payments for' tab. This indicates that e-books are the products being sold using PayPal.
3. Choose between the 'Add to cart' button and the 'Buy Now' buttons. The first example is for websites that have numerous products to choose from where as the secondary example is primarily focused on a singular product.
4. Write a product name and an ID that is easy to remember. The name and ID will show up on the customer's invoice. The name and ID can also be quite helpful when looking over and identifying purchase reports from PayPal.
5. Include the price of the e-book and select the proper currency. If there is only one e-book being sold, the next set of options for customization is irrelevant. Shipping is not needed either, as the e-book will be sent electronically. That section can also be avoided. Whether or not to charge tax is a personal option, but should be taken into consideration when taxes are due.
6. Click the secure option rather than the PayPal account. This is a security measure so that spam and hackers cannot easily access the PayPal information regarding purchases and monetary information.
7. Click the save button to save the PayPal button that has just been created. This could be helpful if a similar button is needed in the future. All of the preferences are then saved and can be edited at a later date if needed.
8. Avoid the next three PayPal options presented. They are irrelevant when the subject matter is an e-book. The link fields, however, are extremely important. This is the obligatory 'thank you' that the buyers will see after purchasing the e-book. This link should also provide buyers with a link to download the e-book they have just purchased. It is important that this link is not connected to a personal website, as the only method to access this website should be through PayPal and purchasing an e-book. If linked to other websites, individuals can simply access it and download the e-book without purchasing it first.
9. Click 'Create button'. PayPal will now give a code for the button that can be copied and pasted into a personal website. The code gives you the freedom to place the button where it looks the best.

Can PayPal Take Money From Your Checking Account After You Close the PayPal Account?

PayPal User Agreement
PayPal's user agreement is the contract between PayPal and you, the user. It provides the terms, actions, rights and responsibilities of both you and PayPal. The contractual language it is written in can be confusing. Many provisions in the agreement protect you: security provisions and limits on financial loss due to fraud. PayPal is protected by many of the provisions when it comes to ensuring limiting liability and its ability to collect funds owed to PayPal. It is important to know the date on which you opened your PayPal account, because the user agreement you committed to may be different from the one posted on PayPal's site today.
PayPal Privacy Policy
PayPal will not disclose your information, except internally and to other organizations that are responsible for ensuring the safety and fraud prevention services, as well as providing relevant information if law enforcement agencies requires PayPal to disclose the information. Information may be shared if any of your payments or remittances has been an error. However, PayPal will confirm transaction numbers, accounts, amounts and other information internally and try to identify the problem by giving basic information without revealing banking details to the parties involved.PayPal also indicates that it could change any of its privacy policies, and it will inform users of these changes. However, PayPal does not ask for permission when changing these policies. Still, PayPal gives protection for privacy to its users and offers discretion and confidence.
Closing a PayPal Account
To close your account, you must enter your profile. At the top of the page there is an option for 'Profile'; log in, select 'Close Account' and the system will prompt you to complete some additional steps. Before you disable your account, you may delete the numbers of your credit or debit cards and your checking account number for security. To do this, you have to log in to your profile and then go to 'Bank Accounts,' select which account numbers you want to close and you should be done. When making this decision you should know that you cannot reactivate your account. When you close your account, you erase your access to the transaction history and all kinds of transactions are suspended. You cannot delete your PayPal account if you have money in your account.
One Risk of 'Agree and Create Account'
The user agreement used to open your PayPal account may allow PayPal, in certain circumstances, to remove money from your bank account. If you signed your user agreement after Oct. 11, 2001 and before Feb. 7, 2003, you are at risk if you had linked your bank account to your PayPal account. By clicking on 'Agree and Create Account' you agreed to allow PayPal to remove funds from the linked bank account that are owed to PayPal. The user agreements from Feb. 7, 2003 forward are more vague as to if PayPal can remove funds from your bank account. However, the language in the agreements does suggest that it is a possibility if you owe PayPal money even after you close your PayPal account.

Alternative to Services Like PayPal

Google Checkout
For online shoppers, Google Checkout works differently than the PayPal model of having an account with predeposited funds. You store your credit or debit card information online and make purchases via your Google Checkout account without your credit card information being given to the merchant. It provides a much more secure way to shop online and reduces the risks of credit card fraud with SSL security that is on par with major banking websites. However, unlike PayPal, Google Checkout does not offer the option to link directly to your checking or savings account. For customers who receive payments online or have a Google AdWords account, Google Checkout offers some key advantages. As of this writing, the fee structure of online payments is 2 percent of the sales price plus 20 cents compared to PayPal's 1.9 percent to 2.9 percent plus 30 cents per transaction. Google Checkout integrates perfectly with Google AdWords accounts and you can pay transaction fees with your AdWords/AdSense earnings. Having both also increases your available discounts on preferred services and enhances your potential sales by displaying a Google Checkout cart next to your ads.
Checkout by Amazon
According to the Amazon Payments website, 'Checkout by Amazon is a complete e-commerce checkout solution that provides your customers with the same secure and trusted checkout experience available on Amazon.com today.' For online shoppers, Checkout by Amazon offers the same ease use, stored information and confidentiality of Google Checkout. A big attraction of Checkout by Amazon is that it takes your stored information with Amazon.com and allows you to make purchases all over the web. Since Amazon.com is already partnered with a significantly large number of other online retailers, the potential for acceptance on shopping sites is higher than Google Checkout. For online entrepreneurs, Checkout By Amazon offers a fee structure of 2.9 percent plus 30 cents for all transactions over $10. However, they do offer discounts based on sales volume that goes as low as 1.9 percent plus 30 cents for all transactions for monthly payment volume over $100,000, according to their website. For transactions under $10, the fee is 5 percent plus 5 cents.
Other Competitors
It is worth noting that there are other, smaller companies that have popped up over the past few years in an attempt to achieve PayPal-like success. As of 2009, the most noteworthy of these are Digital River, NetTeller and AlertPay. However, like the previously successful BidPay that was put out of business by PayPal and then unsuccessfully relaunched again in 2006, most of the companies are considered unreliable and have nowhere near the amount of popular acceptance as Google Checkout or Checkout By Amazon.

How to Retract a Payment on PayPal

1. Decide exactly why you want to retract a payment on Paypal. Most buyers retract a payment because the item arrived in poor condition or the description of the item didn’t match the actual piece. In some cases, you’ll want to retract the payment because the seller never sent you the item at all.
2. Open a dispute with Paypal by opening the transaction name and clicking File A Dispute. Paypal contacts the seller, giving them a specified amount of time to answer to the charges. If the seller doesn’t respond in enough time, the money is automatically credited back to your account.
3. Contact your credit card company and request a chargeback. The way a chargeback works is that your credit card company retracts the Paypal payment and credits the money back to your credit card account. Your card contacts Paypal first to get the details of the account.
4. Follow through with the emails sent by Paypal because the website allows you to initiate a chargeback and dispute at the same time. The emails ask why you want to retract your payment, what your response to the seller is and it may take several weeks for the dispute to settle.
5. Check your account for details about the transaction and the final decision. If Paypal determines that you were right, the company takes the money from the seller and deposits it back in your account. You’ll receive an email from either Paypal or your credit card when the payment is retracted.

Can You Pay Your Cable Bill Using PayPal?

Payment Overview
Paying utilities such as a cable bill with a PayPal account means you do not have to keep your credit card or bank account information handy to type into the cable provider's website. You also don't have to write monthly checks and calculate your register by hand. You are behind a wall of security protection that the site promises. In most cases, paying by PayPal requires you to click a PayPal button, log into your account with an ID and password, enter the amount to pay -- which the cable company may have already auto-filled -- and approve the payment.
Requirements
There are two requirements to being able to pay your cable bill with PayPal. First, you need a PayPal account. An account is free, but you must have the payment sources PayPal requires, such as a bank account or credit card. The other requirement is up to the merchant. In most cases, you'll know whether the cable supplier accepts PayPal with a quick glance at its website -- check for a horizontal yellow PayPal button or icon displayed on the home page. Also check the 'Submit Payment' page for the button or PayPal selection. You can also contact the customer service phone number and ask a representative.
Process
If a cable supplier does allow bill payments through PayPal, there may be one of two payment options. The first is the one-time payment structure, where you'll receive a bill and indicate how much money to pay from your PayPal account. This will occur monthly or however frequently your cable company bills. For example, you receive a bill for your monthly cable for $50. Log into your PayPal account, elect to send $50 to your cable company and send the payment, which would then be deducted from the balance. Another option, though not always available, is a recurring payment and/or automatic billing. This is where you provide your cable company your PayPal account information. While you may still get a bill, the charges will be automatically deducted from or charged to the account.
Considerations
The main consideration to paying cable bills with PayPal is that the money in the account has to come from somewhere. If you elect to use PayPal money -- funds from selling something or earning income -- it must be enough to cover your bill. If it's not, PayPal uses one of the other financial options linked to your account, such as a credit card or your bank account. If either of these default, you could default on your transaction, risk your cable being cut off and may be reported to collections. Another factor to consider is security. While PayPal offers high standards to protect its users, with a dispute center and payment protection, people uncomfortable with putting their personal information online may not feel secure using the service.

How to Send Payments Through PayPal

1. Get the PayPal email address of the person you want to send your payment to. Their PayPal email address may not be the same as their personal email address, so be sure to ask them.
2. Register for an account or log in to your account. To register, you need a valid email address and you have to fill out a short form with your name, address, phone number and other information. To start sending or receiving money, you must input your bank account number, a credit card number or a debit card number. PayPal accepts Visa, Mastercard or Discover.
3. Locate and click the 'Send Money' link at the top of the page.

What Does PayPal Report to the IRS?

Housing Assistance Tax Act
Beginning in 2011, the Housing Assistance Tax Act of 2008 will require companies such as PayPal to report certain information to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Reporting Requirements
Under this act, PayPal is required to report to the IRS any individual or business receiving at least $20,000 in payments from a minimum of 200 transactions.
Preparing and Implementing
The gap between the passage of the 2008 Housing Assistance Tax Act and the law going into effect in 2011 gives PayPal users who receive payments time to prepare for tax reporting and gives the IRS a chance to figure out how to implement the new law.
