How to Dispute With PayPal

1. Verify that you are eligible to file a dispute. You can only file a dispute if you do not receive an item or if an item you receive does not match promised specifications. You have up to 45 days from the date of the transaction to initial a PayPal dispute.
2. Open your browser and go to the PayPal website (see Resources). Enter your PayPal email address and password to log in to your account.
3. Click the Resolution Center link at the top of the page and click 'Dispute a Transaction' to initiate your report. Click the radio button next to 'Item dispute' and click Continue.
4. Click the gray 'Find transaction ID' button to locate the transaction that you wish to dispute. Once you find the correct transaction, click on the Transaction ID and Continue.
5. Fill out the form with information regarding the nature of the transaction, your problem with the transaction and attempts at recourse with the seller. Once you're done with this procedure, your dispute will be created in PayPal's system and the seller will be notified.
6. Respond to any offer that the seller makes to settle the dispute within 10 days of the offer. If you don't accept or decline the offer within 10 days, your dispute will be canceled by PayPal.
7. Escalate the dispute to a claim against the vendor if the problem is not settled to your satisfaction. You can escalate the dispute to a claim by clicking the Resolution Center tab, locating your dispute in the list, and clicking 'Escalate.' You have 20 days to escalate a dispute to a claim; once you do so, PayPal will investigate the transaction and render a judgment in favor of one party within 30 days.
