Google Checkout Vs. PayPal
Availability
As of September 2009, sellers who want to use Google Checkout must be based in the United States or the United Kingdom. It may become to other countries in the future. PayPal merchants can be in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany and several other countries. PayPal is available in 190 countries, with specific guidelines for each one.
Payments
Google Checkout permits you to sell products, services and subscriptions. You can also accept donations if your company is registered as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. With PayPal you can do all of the above, with two additions. Donations can be accepted through your PayPal account even if you don't have a tax-exempt organization. Plus PayPal has person-to-person payments, allowing you to receive payments, even if there are no transactions. For example, if you'd like to send money to a friend, you can do it with PayPal.
Fees
No matter which service you use, you'll have to pay a percentage for each transaction. Google Checkout bases that fee on the amount of sales you generated the previous month. For instance, if your sales totaled less than $3,000 in May, you'd pay 2.9 percent plus 30 percent for each transaction in June. The larger the monthly dollar amount, the lower percentage you'll pay. As of September 2009, PayPal also charges 2.9 percent plus 30 percent per transaction.
Shopping Cart Integration
Whether you're selling a single item or a selection, both Google Checkout and PayPal provide order buttons and shopping carts that you can add to your website. When a customer decides he's ready to make a purchase, he clicks on your order button and enter his address and credit card information. Both services provide this order mechanism. You don't collect the credit card information in either case. This typically makes customers feel comfortable about buying from you.
Payout
Obviously you'll want to receive your money once a transaction is complete. That's where payout comes into play. If you've been with Google Checkout longer than two months, it generally transfers the money to your bank account two days after the transaction is complete. It may take up to an additional three days for you to actually receive the money. However, new merchants must initially wait 10 days before payout is initiated. After a 60-day probationary period, Google Checkout will analyze your account to determine your new payout schedule. With PayPal you can transfer money to your bank account whenever it's available. If you prefer, you can pay $1.50 and have a check sent to you. Or you can apply for a PayPal MasterCard debit card so that you can withdraw the money from any ATM.

How to Set Up Multiple Business PayPal Accounts
1. Sign up for a free Paypal personal account by visiting Paypal and clicking on the 'Sign Up' link at the very top of the page. Click on 'Get Started' under the personal account on the next screen, and the provide your email address, a new password, your name, address and telephone number on the sign-up form. Submit the form, and your new Paypal account has been created.
2. Provide your bank savings or checking account information to Paypal as the destination for funds you'll withdraw later as payments are received. Click on 'Profile' on the menu bar along the top of the page, and then click on 'Bank Accounts' under the 'Financial Information' heading to enter your account information.
3. Add multiple businesses to your personal account by again clicking on the 'Profile' option on the menu bar. Under the first heading, 'Account Information,' click on 'Email', then click on 'Add' on the following screen. You may now add the email address for up to seven additional businesses to your personal account. Note that creating multiple accounts is a violation of Paypal's User Agreement (see References), and will result in termination of all of your accounts.
4. Customize your PayPal payment button on each website you own by clicking on its 'Add More Options' button for each website. Under the, 'Choose an email address to receive payment' link, choose one of the email addresses you created earlier from the list provided to receive payments. By customizing the payment button on each of your websites, you'll now be able to track which website is responsible for every payment you receive.
5. Create a separate user account for your business, but only if your business has its own address, bank account and Employer Identification Number (EIN). A unique EIN and bank account entirely separate from your personal one is the only way that the same individual can make use of separate Paypal accounts without violating the Paypal User Agreement and risking account termination.
How to Pay With PayPal Buyer Credit
1. Choose a retail website that accepts PayPal. If you are uncertain whether a site accepts PayPal, check the site's Help page. For instance, Walmart and eBay list PayPal as one of their accepted payment methods on their Help pages.
2. Pick the items you wish to purchase and proceed to checkout. Enter your name, contact information and shipping details in the appropriate fields, and select PayPal as your payment method. The page will change to a PayPal page.
3. Enter your user name and password to log in to your PayPal account. Once you are logged in, your PayPal credit balance will be displayed as an option for payment. Follow the directions to confirm it as your payment source and complete the transaction. The system will automatically deduct the amount from your credit balance and send you a message by email to confirm your transaction.
How to Use a PayPal Account
1. Register for a PayPal account. You'll need to enter credit card or bank account information, depending on the payment source you want to use. When you make a purchase, money will be transferred from this account to PayPal to pay the merchant. The merchant never sees your bank account or credit card information.
2. Log onto PayPal to pay for an item with another account holder's email address. If you purchase a widget from WidgetOwner@sample.com, for example, and he uses that email address as his PayPal account ID, all you need to do is type that in the seller box. Most merchants who have a PayPal account linked to their websites will have purchase information automatically transferred to the PayPal screen, so you won't need to type anything in manually.
3. Use PayPal when you win an eBay auction. Since eBay owns PayPal, it's the payment method of choice for the online auctioneers. Click on the PayPal pay link after you've won and follow the instructions. A window will appear asking for PayPal login information. Fill in your user name and password and you'll be transferred to the PayPal home page.
4. Set up a merchant or seller account the same way you set up a buyer account. PayPal charges a small fee for every payment sent to a seller account.
5. Protect your PayPal account and bank account security by checking your browser window for the secured PayPal site (https instead of http), and looking for the 'lock' symbol in the corner of your computer screen before you make a purchase on the PayPal site.
