Fundraising Widgets for Facebook
Facebook Causes
Causes is an application developed by Facebook that is intended to help nonprofits with their fundraising. Facebook users can join the cause and donate from the social network, and you can include a donation widget on your website as well. Causes raised about $7 million for nonprofits by 2009 according to Joe Green, one of the developers of Causes, in a 2009 report by Kim Hart and Megan Greenwell that appeared in "The Washington Post." Hart and Greenwell reported however that the success of Causes' pages is often limited. Only 1 percent of those who joined a cause donate, and the majority of organizations listed on Causes received no donations. Causes is only available for nonprofit organizations.
ChipIn
ChipIn is a simple donation widget you can include on a Facebook Page or your organization's website. The widget displays the fundraising goal and how close your organization is to meeting it. Donations are processed through PayPal. ChipIn doesn't require organizations to verify that they are registered nonprofits, so setting up a donation widget takes little time and anyone can use it. ChipIn doesn't charge to create a donation widget, but PayPal charges 2 to 3 percent of each transaction in fees. Verified nonprofits receive the lowest rates.
Razoo
Razoo is a fundraising service that offers a Facebook application along with many other tools. Using Razoo, you can communicate with a team of fundraisers and see who is meeting fundraising goals and who might need encouragement. Donations through Razoo can be shared on Facebook or the Razoo website, giving recognition to donors and fundraisers. The Razoo Facebook application redirects donors to your Razoo fundraising page or your organization's website where their donations are processed securely. Razoo charges 2.9 percent per transaction in fees.
Ammado
Ammado has tools similar to Razoo and other fundraising platforms but can accept donations in more than 75 international currencies. Ammado's Facebook application can take donations directly on Facebook instead of redirecting donors to another website. You can also turn supporters into fundraisers by encouraging donors to add the application to their profiles and invite their friends to donate. Ammado collects 5 to 7 percent of every donation in fees.
PayPal
PayPal provides a donate button you can include on a Facebook Page or profile to raise money. While not a widget or application, the button links to PayPal's website, where donors can give easily using any major credit card even if they don't have a PayPal account. PayPal offers discounted rates to nonprofits, but you must verify your organization's nonprofit status to qualify for the reduced transaction fees. Fees range from about 2 to 3 percent of the transaction amount at the time of publication.
